  • Unveiled: Preferred Layout and Site for New Container Terminal
Cook

Today, the Cook Labor Government unveiled the preferred design and location for a new container terminal in Kwinana, marking a significant milestone for the project that will help to keep Western Australia’s economy strong for the next century.

Fremantle Port currently imports and exports around 800,000 containers annually, but this is expected to grow to more than three million containers over the next 50 years.

It’s been a number of years, this container terminal is under consideration. Its model shows Fremantle Port and its nearby roads that will achieve capacity within the next two decades.

This decision ensures that WA has a terminal and freight network that will support the forecasted progress in container trade and it is also vital to the State’s economy over the next century.

The proposed design and location have been finalised after 18 months of detailed design and consultation with prominent stakeholders and other results of the 2020 Westport Independent Taskforce Stage Two Report.

The design of the container terminal will enable it to meet the needs of the bulky ships compared to the current Fremantle terminal and will also include plans for the redevelopment of the decaying Kwinana Bulk Terminal jetty.

Noticeably, the proposed location will not have any significant impact on the other prominent public infrastructure including Water Corp’s desalination plant and Synergy’s power plants.

Design concepts have been evaluated against diverse criteria that include environmental, long-run sustainability and effectiveness of the supply chain network and port and financial value to the State and local economies. Westport had an extensive engagement with the preeminent experts in engineering, sustainability, marine science and transport to develop and review design options.

Planning and association with stakeholders on the exact location for non-container trade based at Fremantle Port is in process. The project business case which includes the proposed development timing and costing is all set to be final in min 2024.

Moreover, keeping container trade far away from Fremantle Port will also unravel 20 hectares of major inner urban land in Fremantle, which will support the escalating population of WA. Thus, Fremantle Port would be able to preserve its status as a functioning port for cruise, visiting naval and recreational vessels.
