Important Reminder – Responsibilities for Dangerous Goods Shipments

As shipping lines continue to strengthen compliance requirements for Dangerous Goods (DG) cargo, it is essential that shippers and importers understand and fulfil their obligations under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.

Responsibilities Include:

✅ Dangerous Goods are correctly classified
✅ MO41 Dangerous Goods Declarations are completed accurately
✅ Cargo is packed, marked, labelled, and documented in accordance with the current IMDG Code
✅ All applicable Special Provision requirements are met
✅ Supporting documentation is provided at the time of booking
✅ Any MSDS/SDS submitted matches the cargo being shipped and the details declared on the MO41

Particular attention is being given to cargo shipped under IMDG Special Provisions, including SP188 Lithium Battery shipments (UN3480 and UN3481), which must now be declared at the time of booking and accompanied by supporting documentation where required. Failure to correctly declare Dangerous Goods may result in shipment delays, cargo rejection, storage costs, additional charges, and penalties that can be significant.
