A new study has revealed that almost half of the world’s container movements are empty. For every 10 miles a full container travels, 4.1 miles are spent moving empties — up from 3.1 miles before the pandemic.
This happens because global trade is uneven: some countries export far more than they import, while others mostly import. As a result, ports in Asia often face container shortages, while ports in North America and Europe can be overloaded with empty containers.
