Port of Brisbane Closures – Impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred intensifies off the coast of Queensland, the Port of Brisbane is facing significant disruptions, with vessel movements and terminal operations being temporarily suspended. Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) has ordered the evacuation of all commercial vessels from the port, with arrivals and departures suspended until further notice.

Current Situation

As of this morning, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has confirmed that Tropical Cyclone Alfred, currently rated as a Category 1 system, is expected to intensify to Category 2 as it moves southwest towards the Queensland coast. High winds, severe coastal hazards, and heavy rainfall are forecasted to impact Brisbane and surrounding regions, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

Operational Impact

With the closure of the Port of Brisbane from Tuesday, 4 March 2025, to at least Saturday, 8 March 2025, the following disruptions are anticipated:

  • Cargo Delays: The suspension of vessel movements and restricted access to container parks, depots, and airline terminals will lead to significant cargo availability issues throughout the week.
  • Vessel Scheduling Changes: Shipping lines may adjust sailing schedules and reroute vessels to minimize delays caused by the port closure.
  • Potential Additional Charges: Empty container parks are expected to close, and shipping lines may impose container detention fees during this period.
