Australia has strict biosecurity controls in place to manage the risk of Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium), a serious agricultural pest. Importers are reminded that these measures apply to certain plant-based goods and packaging from specific countries.

 

🌍 Target-Risk Countries

Importers must comply with Khapra beetle requirements for goods originating from the following target-risk countries:

Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Cyprus, Egypt, Ghana, Greece, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Somalia, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Timor-Leste, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Yemen

🔧 Approved Treatments:

  • Methyl bromide fumigation at 80g/m³ for 48 hours at 21°C
  • Heat treatment at 60°C for 120 minutes (core temperature)

Note: Treatment must be:

  • Conducted under approved protocols
  • Completed within 21 days of export

 

🌾 High-Risk Plant Products

The following products are considered high risk as potential hosts of Khapra beetle:

  • Bean seed (Phaseolus spp.)
  • Celery seed (Apium graveolens)
  • Chickpeas (Cicer arietinum)
  • Coriander seed (Coriandrum sativum)
  • Cucurbit seed (Cucurbita, Cucumis, Citrullus spp.)
  • Cumin seed (Cuminum cyminum)
  • Dried chillies/capsicum (Capsicum spp.)
  • Faba beans, broad beans, fava beans (Vicia faba)
  • Fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare)
  • Lentils (Lens culinaris)
  • Mung beans, cowpeas (Vigna spp.)
  • Pea seed (Pisum sativum)
  • Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea)
  • Pigeon pea seed (Cajanus cajan)
  • Rice (Oryza sativa)
  • Safflower seed (Carthamus tinctorius)
  • Soybean (Glycine max)
  • Wheat seed (Triticum spp.)

Note: Includes all synonyms and subordinate taxa of the above species.

 

🚫 Exemptions

The following are not subject to Khapra beetle requirements:

  • Thermally processed goods (e.g., retorted, roasted, boiled, puffed)
  • Milled or ground products in bags 25kg
  • Commercially prepared and retail packaged snack foods, cereal mixes, herbal teas, bakery mixes
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Chemically preserved goods (e.g., in formalin or ethanol)
  • Oils, pickled items, or refined plant extracts (e.g., starch, lecithin)
  • Frozen or freeze-dried perishable foods
  • Frozen plant research samples

Retail packaged means the product is commercially prepared overseas and requires no further processing, packaging, or labelling for sale in Australia.
